As much as we hate to say it, summer is winding down and the new school year is just around the corner. If you’re starting college this year, you may be considering joining a sorority, which means you’ll soon be going through recruitment (or rush as its commonly called). You may be excited, anxious, or down right scared about it, but don’t worry, we’re here to help! While it may seem daunting, recruitment is a great opportunity to meet lots of new friends and get to know the girls you’ll be sharing the next four years with, whether or not you decide to pledge. Most of the people out there are in the same exact boat as you, so there’s nothing to be afraid of! Try to enjoy every moment of this unique experience, meet as many people as possible, and most of all, just be yourself!
By now you may be saying, “ok, that’s the easy part, but what do I wear??” Many schools will have a guide that tells you all the ins and outs of the recruitment process, including the dress codes, but it may still be a little vague. We’ve put together some head-to-toe looks to get you through the week based on the recruitment schedule at our own alma mater, Louisiana State University. If you don’t bleed purple and gold like us, make sure to check with Panhellenic at your school to see if the events and dress codes vary!
1. Ice Water
This first phase is often the most hectic, as you’ll be visiting with all of the sororities to introduce yourself. You’ll most likely be doing a lot of walking, so dress cute but comfortable. A sundress and strappy sandals makes a great combo on this day. Don’t be afraid to accessorize with a statement necklace – it will show your personality and may make a great conversation starter!
2. Philanthropy
On this day, you’ll get a chance to know the heart of the sororities you’ve narrowed it down to a little bit better – their philanthropies. This day is a little more casual and laid back, and is an opportunity to get to know the girls a little better. At LSU, the potential members are asked to wear the official recruitment t-shirt along with shorts or skirts and comfortable shoes, so this is an easy dress day! Linen shorts and strappy leather sandals are a classic pair. Don’t forget to wear a watch – you’ll definitely want to be on time to all of the parties you’re invited to!
3. Skit
By now, you’ve narrowed it down to a handful of sororities. You’ll have a chance to visit with each one and watch their house skit. This is a fun night of getting to know the houses a little deeper, but it’s also more on the dressy side. You’ll still be walking around quite a bit though, so wear sensible shoes. A cocktail dress, a few accessories, and wedges will definitely do the trick!
4. Preference
Finally, the big day! You’ll have a chance to meet with the final round of sororities you’ve selected, and this is the most serious night of all. By the end of the night, you’ll be able to list your top three choices, and this is the last step before bid. Dress the part for this special night with a classic sheath dress and sensible pumps. Accessorize with a clutch and simple jewelry.
Now that you have your wardrobe picked out, you’re ready to wow these girls! Enjoy the process, be yourself, and don’t forget the most important accessory – your smile!
